BROWNSBURG PARKS AND RECREATION WINS GRANT FOR RECREATIONAL TRAIL SYSTEM
BROWNSBURG – The Brownsburg Parks and Recreation Department is one step closer to completing a project aimed at creating a safe and easy to use trail system after winning a federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant of $150,000 for the Hornaday Road Trail.
The project will create a 12 foot-wide asphalt trail separate from vehicular traffic that will cater to pedestrians, bicyclists, in-line skaters and people using wheeled mobility devices. Part of the Town’s seven-phase trail study, the Hornaday Road Trail will travel past Brownsburg West Middle School and Delaware Trail and Cardinal elementary schools connecting to the existing trail at East Middle School.
Last year, the Parks Department was awarded a $250,000 Safe Routes to School grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation for a path connecting the neighborhoods from the public library east to Brown Elementary and south in front of Brownsburg High School to Eagle Elementary. This part of the Town’s trail study is the first planned project implementing the Brownsburg Greenways Master Plan.
The goal for the trail system, as identified by the Greenways Master Plan, is to create a better quality of life for residents, connecting key Brownsburg resources while also promoting a healthy lifestyle. The versatility of the trail surface means that residents will be free to explore alternative modes of transportation including bicycles and in-line skates.
This funding will enable the Town to complete what would have been a multi-year project on an accelerated schedule without a significant blow to the budget or an increase in property taxes. When all the phases are complete, residents will be able to travel the trail system from Ronald Regan Elementary School to the B&O Trail and from the Brownsburg Public Library to the B&O Trail. Work on construction of the trails is scheduled to begin in 2012. A copy of the proposed trail system map follows.
